While studying at university, Sam was a Town Councillor for three years and served as part of the council’s Youth Champion team. Before joining the council at the age of 18, Sam served in the UK Youth Parliament for 4 years and served as Chair of Waveney Youth Council for two years. In these roles, Sam has amassed experience in working with the community to set up and support facilities. One project which Sam was involved in was a series of community painting sessions to revamp local play parks. Sam and his Youth Champion colleagues worked with the local district council, local businesses and local parents and other residents to give a new lease of life to the play parks.
Sam has also amassed experience in submitting funding applications and conducting community research. When a Member of the Youth Parliament, Sam helped to secure funding for some summer filming schools to be provided for young people in North Suffolk and he also helped obtain funding for a cinema service at the local public hall. Sam has conducted differing types of research including focus groups, online surveys, face to face interviews and drop-ins.
